Types of Extensions

Bonded extensions (keratin tip, micro-ring, nano-ring) are the longest-lasting option — individual strands attached to small sections of natural hair. They last three to four months and offer the most natural movement because each strand moves independently. Application takes several hours and must be done professionally.

Human Hair vs Synthetic

Human hair extensions can be heat-styled, dyed, and treated essentially like your own hair. They move naturally, blend seamlessly, and last significantly longer with proper care. They're also significantly more expensive. Remy human hair (cuticles aligned in one direction) is the premium standard — it tangles less and lasts longest.

Synthetic extensions have improved dramatically but still have limitations. They can't handle high heat, they reflect light slightly differently from natural hair, and they typically last weeks to months rather than months to years. The price is considerably lower, making them suitable for experimenting without a major investment. Heat-friendly synthetic hair is a middle ground — it tolerates lower heat settings and looks closer to human hair than standard synthetic, at a price point between the two.

Colour Matching and Care

Colour matching is the single most important factor in natural-looking extensions. Most brands offer a wide shade range and many provide colour swatches or virtual try-on tools. When in doubt, go slightly lighter — lighter blends more forgivingly than a too-dark mismatch. Many people buy two close shades and mix them for a more natural, multi-tonal look.

Extension care determines longevity. Brush gently with a loop brush. Wash with sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner. Avoid applying hair cream or oil directly to bonds or tape — it breaks down adhesive. Sleep with hair in a loose braid to prevent tangling overnight.

The biggest enemies of extension longevity are heat, friction, and the wrong products. Minimise heat styling where possible — air-drying is kinder. Silk pillowcases reduce friction that causes tangling overnight. Sulphate-free products prevent the stripping that dries out both natural and extension hair. These aren't fussy requirements — they're simple habits that protect what is genuinely a significant investment.
