Concealer: The Hardest-Working Product in Your Entire Makeup Bag

If foundation is the base coat, concealer is the precision tool. It's the product that deals with everything foundation can't quite handle on its own — dark circles, blemishes, redness around the nose, that stubborn hyperpigmentation that's been lingering since last summer. A good concealer does the targeted, close-up work that transforms a decent base into a genuinely polished one. Skip it and your foundation has to work twice as hard. Use it well and people think you just naturally have flawless skin. That's the magic trick.

What most people don't realise is that concealer is also spectacularly versatile beyond just covering things up. It highlights, sculpts, cleans up eyeshadow fallout, sharpens lip lines, and primes eyelids. Some people use concealer more than they use foundation — just spot-concealing and blending where needed rather than applying a full base. It's a legitimate approach that gives a very natural, skin-first finish, and it's faster than most people think once you've got the technique down.

Liquid, Cream, or Stick — Picking Your Formula

Liquid concealers are the most popular format, and the range of finishes is enormous. Lightweight, radiant-finish liquids are perfect under the eyes where you want to brighten without caking. Fuller-coverage liquids with a matte finish work better on blemishes and areas of discolouration where you need the concealer to actually stay put without sliding around. The doe-foot applicator that comes with most liquid concealers delivers product directly where you need it, which minimises waste and keeps application quick.

Cream concealers come in pots or palettes and tend to offer the richest coverage. They're thicker, more pigmented, and better at concealing significant discolouration, scarring, or tattoos. The trade-off is that they can crease more easily under the eyes if you don't set them, and they're heavier on the skin than liquids. Cream concealers are the professional MUA's go-to for editorial and event work where coverage needs to be bulletproof, and they blend beautifully with a brush or sponge.

Stick concealers are the convenience option. Twist up, swipe on, blend with your finger. They travel well, they don't leak, and they're fast. Coverage varies from medium to full depending on the formula, and the wax content in most sticks gives them decent staying power without setting powder. If your concealer routine needs to happen in a car, a lift, or a bathroom queue, sticks are unbeatable for speed.

Shade Matching — And Why You Might Need Two Shades

For blemishes and redness, match your concealer exactly to your skin tone (or your foundation shade). The goal is to make the imperfection disappear into the surrounding skin — not to highlight it with a shade that's too light or draw attention with one that's too dark.

Under the eyes is different. Here, going one shade lighter than your skin tone creates a brightening effect that counteracts the shadows cast by the eye socket. This is the "triangle of light" technique that makeup artists swear by: concealer applied in an inverted triangle under each eye, blended downward, lifting the entire midface. It sounds dramatic but the effect is subtle and incredibly flattering.

Colour correctors are the step before concealer for really stubborn discolouration. Peach or orange correctors neutralise dark circles on medium to deep skin. Green corrects redness. Lavender brightens sallow undertones. You apply the corrector first, then concealer on top. It sounds like a lot of layers, but each one is thin and the result is coverage that looks natural rather than thick and plastered on.

Setting Your Concealer — The Step That Makes It Last

Concealer that isn't set will crease, fade, and transfer within hours. A light dusting of translucent powder — applied with a small fluffy brush, pressed gently rather than swept — locks everything in place without mattifying so aggressively that the under-eye area looks dry and textured. Bake if you want to (applying a thick layer of powder, leaving it for a few minutes, then dusting off the excess), but know that it's a strong look that suits some skin types and ages better than others. For most people, a light set is plenty.

On blemishes, setting is non-negotiable. Concealer over a spot that hasn't been set will rub off within an hour, especially if you're the type to unconsciously touch your face (which, let's be honest, is most of us). Tap a tiny amount of powder directly onto the concealed spot with a fingertip. Done.

A Note on Concealer Longevity

Liquid concealers typically last 12-18 months once opened — after that, the formula starts to separate, the pigment can oxidise (turning slightly orange), and the preservatives lose effectiveness. If your concealer smells off, has changed consistency, or isn't blending the way it used to, it's time to replace it. Cream concealers in pots tend to dry out faster than tubes. Keep them sealed properly between uses, and if the surface develops a hard skin, scrape it off — the product underneath is usually still fine for another few weeks.
