Men's Gilets: The Layer Nobody Talks About and Everybody Needs

The gilet — sleeveless body warmer, call it what you will — tends to get overlooked in men's wardrobe conversations in favour of more glamorous outerwear. Which is a shame, because it does something that no other garment does quite as well: it adds core warmth without restricting arm movement, without the bulk of a full jacket, and in a way that layers cleanly over almost anything. The person who has mastered the gilet as a layering piece has a wardrobe tool that the person dismissing it as a country-estate cliché simply lacks.

Down and Synthetic-Fill Gilets

The quilted down or synthetic-fill gilet is the most practical version — lightweight, packable, and providing significant warmth for its weight. Worn over a jumper or under a coat, it provides a meaningful extra layer in cold weather without the restriction of a full jacket. Real down (especially responsible down standard certified) provides the best warmth-to-weight ratio; synthetic fill performs better when damp and is generally more affordable. For everyday urban use, the difference is minimal. For outdoor pursuits where getting wet is a genuine possibility, synthetic fill is the more pragmatic choice.

The fit should be close enough to allow a jacket to be worn over the top — a bulky gilet that prevents layering defeats much of the point. Look for a hem length that covers the torso without going below hip level, and armholes cut generously enough to move freely without restriction.

Fleece Gilets

A fleece gilet is lighter on warmth than a quilted version but more breathable and often more versatile as a mid-layer for active use. Walking, hiking, and outdoor activities where you are generating your own heat benefit from the breathability of fleece over the trapping warmth of down. A clean-cut fleece gilet in a neutral colourway also sits neatly over a shirt or under a coat for urban casual wear.

Waxed Cotton and Technical Gilets

At the more traditional country end of the market, waxed cotton gilets have a distinctly British quality — water-resistant, durable, and with the slightly worn-in patina of waxed cotton that improves with use. They work less well as a pure thermal layer but are excellent in mild, wet weather where you need wind and rain protection without full jacket coverage. Technical gilets from outdoor and performance brands take this further — windproof, water-resistant, and engineered for specific weather conditions.

Styling

The styling register of a gilet is determined almost entirely by the fabric and context. A quilted gilet over a shirt or fine knit is versatile from smart-casual to outdoor; a technical fleece version signals outdoor or active intentions; waxed cotton is unmistakably rural or Barbour-inflected British. All of them work best when the rest of the outfit is clean and the gilet is treated as a functional layer rather than a statement piece. Colour and Styling

Gilets work best in understated colourways that allow them to function as a genuine wardrobe layer rather than a statement piece. Navy, charcoal, black, olive, and tan are the most versatile. Brighter or more distinctive colourways can work in the right context but limit how the gilet integrates with the rest of the wardrobe. A neutral gilet over a navy jumper and jeans, under a grey overcoat, reads as considered and well-layered in a way that a bright-coloured version over the same outfit does not. For branded or logo-heavy gilets, the same principle applies as with most branded clothing — they look best when the branding is a secondary detail rather than the entire point of the garment. A Barbour or Patagonia logo on the chest is a detail; a large graphic across the back is a statement that either works or does not depending entirely on the rest of the outfit and the context you are wearing it in. In most cases, the less prominent the branding, the more versatile the piece and the longer it will continue to look current rather than dated as brand associations shift over time.

The length of the gilet relative to the jacket or coat worn over it matters — a very long gilet that hangs below a shorter jacket looks inelegant. Ideally the gilet is slightly shorter than the outer layer, or at the same length. Hip-length works for most layering applications. Longer body-warmer styles have a country or equestrian association that works in some contexts and less well in others.
