Velvet has made an enormous comeback — rich, tactile, deeply coloured, and more durable than its luxurious feel suggests. Leather remains the premium upholstery material — durable, wipeable, temperature-adaptive, and developing a beautiful patina that only improves with age. Full-grain leather is the highest quality: it shows the natural markings of the hide (which are features, not flaws) and ages into rich, character-filled surfaces that synthetic materials can't replicate. Semi-aniline and pigmented leathers are more uniform and more resistant to staining but lose some of the natural character. Cushions that stay in one position permanently compress unevenly, develop permanent body impressions, and the side facing the room fades in sunlight while the back stays pristine. Even rotation extends cushion life significantly and keeps the whole piece looking even rather than worn in patches.

Protect from direct sunlight. UV radiation fades fabric colours over time — the arm of a sofa that catches afternoon sun will noticeably lighten compared to the back that stays in shadow. Curtains, blinds, or UV-filtering window film reduces this fading and protects your furniture investment from the most common form of colour deterioration. Slipcovers provide an additional protective layer that takes the daily wear rather than the permanent upholstery — and they're replaceable when they eventually show age.

Reupholstering: When Refresh Beats Replace

If the frame is solid but the fabric is worn, stained, or outdated, reupholstering gives you essentially new furniture at a fraction of replacement cost. A well-made sofa or armchair with a hardwood frame can be reupholstered multiple times over its lifetime — each time with a different fabric to suit your current style and the room's evolving design scheme.
