Sun Cream: The Single Most Important Skincare Product You'll Ever Own

Everything else in skincare is optional. Serums, retinol, vitamin C, exfoliants — all brilliant, all effective, all secondary to sunscreen. UV radiation causes roughly 80% of visible skin ageing. Wrinkles, dark spots, loss of elasticity, uneven texture, that leathery quality that people associate with "getting older" — the overwhelming majority of it is sun damage, not ageing. Sunscreen is the product that prevents all of this, and it costs less than most serums. If you're doing one thing for your skin, this is the thing.

Sun creams are the traditional sunscreen format: a cream or lotion applied to the skin that absorbs or reflects UV radiation before it can damage skin cells. They're the most widely used, most widely tested, and most reliably effective form of sun protection available. Every dermatologist on the planet recommends daily sunscreen use. There is no debate on this point.

SPF Numbers: What They Actually Mean

SPF measures protection against UVB rays (the ones that cause sunburn). SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB. SPF 30 blocks about 97%. SPF 50 blocks about 98%. The jump from 30 to 50 is only 1% — which is why SPF 30 is considered the minimum effective level and going higher provides diminishing returns. No sunscreen blocks 100% of UV, regardless of the number on the bottle.

But SPF only measures UVB protection. UVA rays (which penetrate deeper and cause ageing, pigmentation, and contribute to skin cancer) aren't covered by the SPF number. Look for "broad spectrum" on the label, which means both UVA and UVB protection. In the EU, the UVA circle symbol confirms the product meets the standard. Without broad spectrum protection, you're preventing burn while still accumulating the ageing damage underneath.

Chemical vs Mineral Sunscreen

Chemical (organic) sunscreens absorb UV radiation and convert it to heat, releasing it from the skin. Active ingredients include avobenzone, octisalate, and octocrylene. They blend invisibly, feel lightweight, and work well under makeup. The main criticism: some chemical filters (oxybenzone, octinoxate) have raised environmental concerns regarding coral reef damage, leading several countries to restrict their use in marine environments.

Mineral (physical) sunscreens sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays. The active ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They're generally better tolerated by sensitive skin, effective immediately on application (chemical sunscreens need 15–20 minutes to activate), and reef-safe. The traditional drawback — a white cast that makes you look like you've applied correction fluid to your face — has been largely solved by modern micro-fine formulations, though mineral sunscreens on deeper skin tones can still leave a slight ashy cast. Tinted mineral sunscreens solve this completely.

Application: The Part Everyone Gets Wrong

The recommended amount for the face alone is a quarter-teaspoon — that's about a two-finger-length strip. Most people apply a third to half the recommended amount, which means they're getting a fraction of the stated SPF. If you apply half the recommended amount of SPF 50, you're getting roughly SPF 7. That's not a typo. Application amount is everything.

Reapply every two hours when outdoors, and immediately after swimming, sweating, or towelling off. "Water-resistant" means the sunscreen maintains its stated SPF for 40 or 80 minutes of water exposure — it doesn't mean waterproof. Nothing is waterproof. Reapplication is the non-negotiable habit that separates people who think sunscreen doesn't work from people who use it correctly.

Apply sunscreen as the last step of your skincare routine, before makeup. Let it absorb for two to three minutes before applying foundation or primer on top. If reapplying over makeup during the day isn't practical, keep a sunscreen spray or SPF setting mist in your bag for top-ups without disturbing your base.

Daily Use vs Holiday Use

The sunscreen you wear to the beach isn't necessarily the sunscreen you should wear to the office. Beach sunscreens prioritise water resistance, high SPF, and robust protection across hours of direct exposure. Daily sunscreens prioritise cosmetic elegance — lightweight texture, invisible finish, compatibility with makeup. Many people benefit from owning both: a heavy-duty cream for outdoor days and a lighter formula for daily commuting and indoor work. The daily product gets used 300+ days a year, so it needs to be something you actually enjoy applying — pleasant texture, minimal white cast, no pilling under makeup.
